Eames Fiberglass Armchair LAR White Base
The Eames Fiberglass Armchair LAR White Base was created by Charles and Ray Eames for the brand Vitra.
This renowned American design duo created some of the most iconic 20th century furnishings, some of which are still being produced today. The couple had a close relationship with Erika and Willi Fehlbaum, the founders of Vitra, which resulted in the Swiss manufacturer owning and controlling the vast archive of Eames designs and memorabilia from their German design campus.
The Eames Fiberglass Armchair LAR White Base is part of the design collection submitted to the Museum of Modern Art's Low Cost Furniture Design Contest, and was awarded second prize. Due to ecological concerns about the use of the plastics, the chair was taken out of production in 1993. However, manufacture recommenced once the sustainability issues had been addressed. Commonly known as the Shell Chair, this timeless furniture item was one of Charles and Ray Eames' favourite designs and featured extensively in the room layouts of their California home. The chair is made from fibreglass and steel, and measures 62.5 x 63 x 61 cm, with a seat height of 25.5cm.
