S 34 Pure Materials Cantilever Armchair
The S 34 Pure Materials Cantilever Armchair was designed by Mart Stam for the brand Thonet.
Born in the Netherlands, Stam was a major 20th century product designer, architect, and urban visionary. But he was probably most famous for his chair designs, an area that he revolutionised while part of the legendary Bauhaus grouping. His designs pioneered the use of cantilever steel tubing - a technology which was also pushed forward by German-Austrian label Thonet throughout the century. So it's no surprise to see the two coming together with the S 34 Pure Materials Cantilever Armchair.
Possibly the first mass-produced chair to use steel tubing when it made its debut in 1927, the S 34 uses the technology wonderfully. Doing away with four-legged designs, Stam found a new way to support sitters, while creating a format that could offer greater comfort and flexibility. In this case, the S 34 Pure Materials Cantilever Armchair uses a gorgeous leather fabric for the seat, which stands 45cm from the floor. The chair itself measures 57 x 84 x 64 cm - ideal for most domestic situations. Blending a streamlined composition with superb use of materials, it offers a delightful addition to studies and offices alike.
