Eames Fiberglass Side Chair DSR Black Base
The Eames Fiberglass Side Chair DSR Black Base was created by Charles and Ray Eames, a married couple, for the design label Vitra.
Vitra, a family-owned company based in Birsfelden, was founded in 1950 and is managed today by Nora Fehlbaum. It has been a subsidiary company of the Eczacibasi Group, a Turkish organization that manufactures ceramics and tiles all over the world since 1942. Charles and Ray Eames are mostly remembered for the post-World War II furniture made of such materials as fiberglass-reinforced plastic and moulded plywood. They won a second prize for the 1948 International Competition for Low Cost Furniture Design.
The Eames Fiberglass Side Chair DSR Black Base was inspired by the couple?s quest for alternative materials. It is organically crafted into a one-piece shell. Made of fibreglass and steel, it provides an added benefit of pleasant tactile features and an elegant silhouette for maximum comfort. The Eames Fiberglass shell is 43cm in height, 55cm in depth and 46.5cm in width. The Eiffel Tower base, which makes the DSR chair 83cm high, is an intricate construction of steel wire. A clear-cut series of individual bases combines freely with the shells to serve different purposes. Clearly visible fibres give the irregular surface the look of natural material.
